Organic Farming in Tamil Nadu

 
“For nearly three decades the policy of the American and European multinationals has been oriented to the intensive production of seeds and agricultural products. From India to Latin America, millions of hectares have been transformed from traditional farming to the intensive cultivation of grain by large corporations.

Although the productivity per hectare has increased tens of times, the benefits of this change are going to corporations. In Tamil Nadu, one of India’s poorest states, the challenge is to start producing crops through organic farmingi and direct sales, transforming resources into economic wealth in an environmentally and socially sustainable way.ii

(i) Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. Organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides but excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured (synthetic) fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, genetically modified organisms, human sewage sludge, and nanomaterials.
